First things first, clean!

Take everything out of your closet. Your shirts, pants, socks, that old shoe box in the back that you aren’t quite sure what is inside, yeah take all of it out.

Go in with a simple cleaner and disinfectant. I like using 1dl of water with a tablespoon of vinegar and a few drops of lemon to dampen a cleaning cloth. Wipe down all the surfaces, and vacuum the dust. Now that you have a clean canvas you can start on a fresh page.

 

Second is to go through each item one by one.

If you do not absolutely love it, leave it aside for later. Start to add the items back with a certain theme in mind or intention. For example, you can organize your clothes by purpose (daily wear, fancy attire, knits, etc) or you can organize by color or by style.  The options are limitless, as long as it makes sense to you and you can keep up with this routine in the future that is all that matters!

Third thing to do is take inventory

What is left after the favorites have gone back into the closet? Anything that you have grown out of, whether physically, spiritually, or emotionally, donate it! Prepare a pile that you will take to your local donation center. If the pieces hold more value, and you feel that you can get some monetary compensation, take a look at your online markets. Facebook, Depop, and Asos Marketplace are some good resources to keep gently used clothing in a sustainable circulation. While you may be done with the piece, someone else out there may be hoping for exactly that addition in his or her wardrobe.

Now is your opportunity to fix the pieces that need some TLC. Investing in the pieces you already own make them that much more valuable and sentimental. I have a local cobbler here in Helsinki in the Punavuori district that I visit every few seasons with my leather pieces and shoes that need repair. I also have learned a few tricks for sewing simple repairs on my own.

Take some time to sew on the old buttons that fell off at last Christmas party. Use that nappy old single sock as rag to spend some time giving your beloved Chelsea boots a good shoeshine.  That way your can set yourself up for success and you will look flawless for the week ahead!

So maybe you’re wondering, where the F is the self care?
