One item that is surely in nearly every closet, thrift store, and donation bin, is the notorious white button-up shirt. While men’s style moves through its own cycles throughout the seasons, this piece is present through it all. While fabrics, colors, and details may change, one thing is certain, this piece is a timeless staple.
We noticed these pieces in our dad’s closet, in our brother’s hampers, and filling up the aisles at the second-hand stores, and we felt inspired. It is the perfect blank canvas to customize your own fashion while upcycling materials that already exist. So whether you want to have a statement piece, or you are conscious of your carbon footprint, yet still desire something new for your wardrobe, this article is for you. Together, with the help of our friendly seamstress, we curated three different looks to glam up that old drab button shirt.
While most of us are savvier in editing photos on Instagram, or deep into our new fitness regime, practical skills like sewing and hemming clothes have gone with the days of black and white TV and family radio shows. So we also encourage you, if you decide to take part in this project, to embrace local businesses and seek out a seamstress for hire in your area. This way supporting your local means money well spent on small business owners, fueling creativity, and building a community. Fashion relationships are much more than asking for your bank pin code at the checkout, which is why we love what our local seamstress was able to do with a simple old white shirt and a little directional vision.

Presenting the first of the new redesigned looks is the most glam by far. By adding a textural fabric to the sleeves and bottom edge of the shirt to ultimately make a statement piece and add the wow factor! For those who are truly looking to turn heads, this one is for you! While we decided to adhere to the traditional white fabric, other options could be to add a custom dye or have a longer gown for even more drama.

In the second style, and maybe our favorite, is the cropped top. While from the front this piece is all business, the back is where you find the pop of detail and a subtle expression of creativity. We love the flash of skin and the flattering new hem.

On the last look, we envisioned a more tailored design. This style can probably be worn anytime, anywhere. It is by far the most versatile of the transformations, and it is the most flattering, especially on our CEO Sarianne. She owned this look and it worked perfectly with her figure.
And that’s why we love this project so much. Your blank canvas can become your most flattering piece! Or it can add some drama to your evening attire. Whether your dress it up, dress it down, or somewhere in between, you too can upcycle your dreams and have a custom tailored wardrobe, as long as you have the vision to see the diamond in the rough!
