Brave women from Bravehair

Home / Inspiration / Brave women from Bravehair

The breast cancer month is coming to an end, but the fight against cancer continues strong! The following is the origin story of one woman who found a career out of helping others, and herself, during her darkest hour in life. Her courage inspires us at Fedited, and we want to share with you why Bravehair for brave women is so important…

“In early summer 2014, I told my friends that my life seemed to be somewhere else, I wasn’t present. Then at the end of the summer, my life was totally gone. My doctor called me: ‘Yes, you have a breast cancer.’

My healthy body has been a self-evident truth to me. But now I was a statistical number among women with a breast cancer. I tried to react as peacefully as possible. Even though the operation and the treatments afterward. I thought I was O.K. with my breasts being removed, but I was not prepared to face the fact that I would lose my hair too. My hair was somehow nearer than the breasts. Every day I have touched, combed, brushed, washed etc. my hair. After the treatment, when I would touch my head, under my hand was just skin.”

“Society in Finland takes good care of cancer patients. I got the check to buy a wig. I found a good one, but I didn’t like to use it. It felt odd. It was not my hair. Taking care of the wig was a bit complicated too.

I noticed that I very often used a soft cotton hat. It felt gentle and soft. Then I got an idea. Would it be possible that some hair could appear from under the hat? ”I could be myself again.” How easy to wear a hat instead of a wig. I felt braver going shopping, to the hospital, outings, easy! I had many different hats and I could change the hairpiece quickly and easily. I didn’t have to wash the wig all the time. With the hairpiece, the hat seemed very natural. Slowly my own hair started to grow. You can imagine how wonderful it was, I was so grateful! I hope that others will find this invention as useful as I did. We all need strength – That’s why I want to call it Bravehair. We accept the situation and do our best. And then we go forward!

Life is now! Not only in the future.”

This was the first thing that I learned about Satu when I Googled Bravehair: I immediately felt that she is a very brave woman because she shared her story to the whole world. I think what makes her even braver is the fact that even after she’s healthy again, she thinks of cancer every day because of her company. But at the same time, she’s helping others.

Bravehair is a company that designs hats with MyHair human hair, and option with synthetical hair. Like Satu said in her story, wigs didn’t feel right and going out with the bald head wasn’t her thing. So she came up with an idea of wearing those comfy cotton beanies but when there’s some hair attached to them, no one would know she has cancer. That is where the journey started for Bravehair. With Satu came also Minna Haantaus-Pekarila into my life. She’s the master maker of the hats with hair. She owns a hair salon in Hämeenlinna called Hiusstudio Muoto. This is where I donated my hair.

Bravehair is based on stories. Everyone who buys a hat has a story to share. The hat might be a present for someone or for himself or herself. I have known Satu for a year now and I called her because I had a story to tell. I’m not telling that story yet, but soon I will, I promise. In the meantime I want to tell some of the stories that I’ve heard over the past year:

“What makes her even braver is the fact that even after she’s healthy again, she thinks of cancer every day because of her company.”

There came a woman to Hiusstudio Muoto to cut off her hair all the way because she had just heard she has cancer and the chemotherapy would start soon. So she cut her hair and would wear them later proudly again with a help of a hat.

When there was the national campaign of people donating their hair for as materials for the hats, Hiusstudio Muoto received so many braids that there wasn’t enough storage for them. It was amazing to see how many people were willing to help.

Two friends came to Hiusstudio Muoto. The other friend wanted to donate her own hair to her friend who was diagnosed with cancer. She loved her so much that she wanted to help her and give her hope of recovery by having this amazing hat.

In the filming studio, the makeup artist talked with Satu while she was doing her makeup. It turned out her young son was diagnosed with Alopecia just a month ago and it felt like Satu and the makeup artist was meant to meet because there was Satu giving her all this information about support groups and also about the hat models for children and boys.

These are just a few of the amazing stories that come across the lives of Satu and Minna on their journey to help others.

So next, it is my turn to tell my story.

I want to give someone the hat that has my hair (see the photo). We want you to send your story or the story of someone you know, who would really need a hat like this! Not only will we gift the hat, but we will also arrange a special day just for her. She will have a professional makeup artist doing her makeup, we will style her with amazing garments from local designers and do an editorial photo shoot with her! Food and drinks will be served all day and she doesn’t need to worry about a thing. At the end of this Cinderella day, she will have a special gift full of goodies. Could she be you or someone close to you? We want to find the right person, send us an email to press@fedited.com and share your story!
